Just because its summer doesn’t mean all your flowers have to be outdoors. Flowers and plants inside the home are proven to boost happiness levels!

Indoor plants don’t have to be dull and boring. You can bring them to life with quirky pots and vases, mix up the colour schemes or even use terrariums. Pots and vases can be bought anywhere for relatively little and they can make a huge statement or just be something simple, whatever you decide. Bold colours, monochrome stripes, geometric shapes, baskets and birdcages can all be used. There is also a great range of quirky items available that can reflect your personality including personalised pots with photographs on them. You can also upcycle your own favourite items into something new by using welly boots, toys or even mugs.

For the creations themselves you can use whatever you like. Keep it simple with plants of similar colours and heights; maybe add a splash of colour with some yellow marigolds or a few daisies to brighten things up. Add a delightful aroma to the room with lavender or be totally bold and use intense colours to really make a statement. Hanging baskets are also a great addition to your home. These baskets are beautiful when the flowers are draped over the side, making them look more luxurious.

Terrariums are also a fantastic idea for you home. This miniature ecosystem can be made to reflect upon different habitats like a jungle, savannah or woodland; perfect for those missing being closer to nature. They are made using glass containers of any size and filled with soil, leaf litter, your selected plant life and even animals such as insects, reptiles and even small birds depending on the size of the container. They are great as a learning experience for children as well, teaching them about how ecosystems work. The Moon Valley Friendship plant is a great addition to a terrarium. Green and textured on the top of the leaves and red underneath, these plants can also bloom beautiful pink flowers. The Polka-Dot plant is beautiful red, spotted, leafy plant great for adding some colour to an otherwise green environment. Croton plants also come in a range of different colours but they require a lot of light so grow them in an open jar.

As we begin making plans for the Dublin Garden Festival 2014, we decided to step back in time to 1988 and the Flower Festival of Christ Church Cathedral. Organised in celebration of the Dublin’s Millennium and 950 years of Christ Church Cathedral, over 100,000 blooms were arranged in stunning poses by the Association of Irish Flower Arrangers inspired by the ‘Dublin Down the Ages’ theme. As a result of the Festival, £10,000 was contributed to the Organ Fund. Of equal importance was the pleasure derived by the 13,000 visitors, perhaps best summed up by one visitor leaving the Festival who was heard to greet a friend with the words, “I’ve just been in heaven”. We look forward to echoing this sentiment this year.

We look forward to repeating this success this year from, Friday 13th until Sunday 15th June 2014.
